Lord Carlisle

2017

Byron came under the care of his relative, Frederick Howard, Earl of Carlisle, who was not a good guardian as he was a snob and dandy and very competitive. Byron meets Frederick Howard, fifth Earl of Carlisle (1748-1825), related to Byron. Hanson encourages Lord Carlisle to confer on the young Lord’s education and act as his official guardian. Carlisle uses his influence to get Lady Byron a yearly provision of 300 out of the Civil List. In 1809 when Byron came of age to join the House of Lords, he was asked to present proof of his genealogy of his grandfather and grandmother Byron’s wedding. As first cousins, they were married at their family chapel. This attack was initiated by Lord Carlisle, who maintained his arrogance towards him and his mother.
