Henry Edward the 19th baron Grey de Ruthyn leases Newstead for the 4 remaining years of Byron’s minority at a yearly cost of 50 pounds. He makes an open invitation to Byron to visit the estate. Byron, with a broken heart - after he found out that Mary even mocked his lameness, Byron left Annesley Hall and stayed with Gray instead of returning to Harrow. Gray was 23 years old but treated the young Byron as a friend and equal. They spent the next three months hunting and other activities. But in January 1804, the Baron de Ruthyn committed a mysterious atrocity that made young Byron leave his house in disgust. In his letter to Augusta, he says the secret protected another person’s honor.
